Fun Facts about Coffee Pods

We regularly receive questions from new customers asking us about coffee pods.  So we have written an article explaining some of the fun facts to help answer many of these outstanding questions.

Fun Fact #1 – Single Use Pre Ground Coffee:

Coffee pods are a single-use coffee option designed to fit within a coffee pod machine.  Designed for convenience with a premeasured quantity of pre-ground coffee.

Fun Fact #2 – First Created in the 1980s:

Coffee pods were first introduced in the 1980, and due to the convenience, their use has grown over time.

Fun Fact #3 – The terms “coffee pod” and “coffee capsule” are the same thing:

These two terms continue to be used everywhere, but the fact is, they both mean the same thing.

Fun Fact #4 – Hard Water can affect the taste of Coffee:

Coffee pods are not filtered, but using filtered water can make a difference to the taste of your coffee.  And the use of filtered water will also protect your coffee pod machine.

Living in an area with hard water means you have a higher concentration of minerals.  This influences coffee taste and means you must clean your coffee pod machine more regularly.

Fun Fact #5 – Coffee Pod Machines require cleaning:

Further to the point made in “Fun Fact 4”, when there is a build up of minerals in your coffee pod machine, it will affect is performance and abiliyt to extract coffee from the pod.

A cup of coffee is approximately 99% water, and all water contains minerals (such as calcium and magnesium), passing through the pod machine.

These minerals build up and accumulate over time on all machine parts where water makes contact.  Descaling is the process of removing this mineral build up.

Fun Fact #6 – Caffeine content relates to coffee beans:

On average, pods contain around 60 mg of coffee per pod. The amount of caffeine can vary between coffee beans.  For example, Arabica has a different caffeine concentration than Robusta.

Robusta coffee beans contain greater caffeine levels.

Fun Fact #7 – Coffee Pod Intensity Ratings is not caffeine strength:

As mentioned above, the actual strength of caffeine has a lot to do with the beans.

But all pods have numbered “intensity” ratings (see below).  This has nothing to do with the caffeine strength of caffeine concentration.  This number represents the strength of the flavour and aroma of a specific coffee pod.
