Understanding How Much Caffeine Is in Your Favourite Spiced Drink
A typical chai latte contains between 25 and 70 mg of caffeine per serve. The exact amount can vary depending on several key factors, including the size of the cup, the brand from which you purchase, and how the drink is prepared.

Where Does the Caffeine Come From?
The caffeine in a chai latte comes from the black tea that forms the base of traditional chai. Black tea naturally contains caffeine, but the final content in your cup can be affected by:
#1. Steeping time: The longer the tea is steeped, the more caffeine is extracted.
#2. Water temperature: Generally, hotter water extracts more caffeine from the tea leaves.
#3. Preparation method: Some chai lattes are made with brewed tea, while others can be made with Nespresso® compatible pods. Both will have different caffeine levels.
#4. Type of tea: Some brands may use stronger or weaker black teas, or even blends.
Variations in Caffeine Content
- Standard chai latte (regular black tea): 25–70 mg per serve
- Decaffeinated chai latte: 0 mg (made with decaf tea or concentrate)
- Instant or powdered chai mixes: May have lower or higher caffeine depending on the brand and recipe
If you’re sensitive to caffeine or want to avoid it altogether there are decaffeinated chai options. Always ask your barista or check the packaging if you need to know the exact amount.
