Many people have heard of the Chai Latte, but most Australians are used to what’s found in their local cafe. But did you ever wonder what an authentic Chai Latte looks and tastes like?
A Chai Latte consists of black tea, spices, and your choice of milk (typically heated).
Since Chai originated in and can be traced back to ancient India, understanding what makes up an authentic Chai Latte requires some research into how this drink is made in that part of the world.
History suggests the Chai Latte comprised a mixture of ingredients believed to have medicinal properties and was used to treat various ailments.
In India this drink is called “Masala Chai”, where “masala” means spice and “chai” means tea. If you have heard the term “Masala Chai” before that is where this term comes from.
The Masala Chai is based on black tea infused with fragrant spices and served with milk.
The primary source of authenticity for the Chai Latte comes from the array of spices used.
Multiple combinations of spices are used in India, and there appears to be no single source of truth.
But for those who have researched this topic, there is a common trend in spices being used in India:
- Fresh ginger
- Cardamom pods
- Cinnamon
- Whole cloves
- Peppercorns
- Star anise
And less frequently there are three other ingredients/spices that can also be found….
- Fresh mint
- Fennel seeds
- Nutmeg
- Cane Sugar
When there is a need to sweeten the Masala Chai, cane sugar is commonly used.
